Rolling Blackouts: Emergency Plan and Conserving Power
With abnormally high temperatures arising this summer, it is likely that energy usage could be above average causing a potential shortage in Indiana along with other states in the Midwest.
If the electric grids are unable to support the amount of electricity being used, Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) will have no choice but to implement rolling blackouts.
Individuals are advised to have emergency plans in place in the event that rolling blackouts need to occur, such as using a backup generator and having access to flashlights. Helping to conserve energy during peak times during the day (2-8pm) is the most crucial action that we can take.
Steps that residents and businesses can take to do their part in conserving energy:
- Set air conditioner thermostats up a few degrees
- Run dishwashers sparingly before or after peak hours
- Avoid doing laundry on extremely hot days
- Close curtains and blinds
- Take shorter showers
- Shut off lights
