HCAC 2022 Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Notebook, Week 6

The Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) Outdoor track and field teams competed in week six of the 2022 season.

Men’s Track Athlete of the Week:

Enrique Salazar (Plymouth, Ind.) Manchester University | Junior - Salazar set yet another school record on Saturday at Ohio Northern, this time in the 1500m. Salazar's time of 3:53.86 broke Tom Lower's record – a record which had stood for more than 40 years (1980). Salazar's time was also a new meet and facility record at Ohio Northern. The previous facility record had stood since 1991 (Jeff Prowles of Mount Union, 3:58.39).

Men’s Field Athlete of the Week:

Justin Dreyling (Cincinnati, Ohio) Mount St. Joseph University | Sophomore - At the Mount St. Joseph University Invitational Dreyling turned in a successful day, winning both the long jump and triple jump. His first place finish in the long jump (6.93m) tied his personal best and his winning efforts in the triple jump (13.87m) is good for the second best distance in HCAC.

Women’s Track Athlete of the Week:

Traci Cross (Toledo, Ohio) Defiance College | First-Year - Cross placed second in both the 100 and 200-meter dashes at the Mike Becraft Invite on Saturday. Cross dominated the 100-meters with the fastest time in the prelims with a blazing 12.31 seconds and then placed second in the finals with a time of 12.32 seconds. Cross also placed second in the 200-meters with a time of 25.79 seconds.

Women’s Field Athlete of the Week:

Claire Perkins (Danville, Ind.) Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology | Senior – Perkins won the pole vault with a career-best mark of 10' 6" that ranks No. 2 in Fightin' Engineer history. Her effort helped Rose-Hulman take home first place honors as a team in the meet.

Men’s

Michael Sweigart (Alexandria, Ind.) Anderson University | First-Year - During the Mike Becraft Invitational, Sweigart took third in the shot put and fourth in the discus. Sweigart put together a distance of 14.16 meters in the shot put and turned in a distance of 40.19 meters in the discus throw. He also posted a distance of 39.20 meters in the hammer throw.

Desmond Gist (Detroit, Mich.) Bluffton University | Sophomore – Gist ran a PR of 14.80 in the 110 hurdles at Ohio Northern on Saturday, improving his conference-leading mark and moving him into the top 30 nationally. He finished second by a hundredth of a second to a runner from NCAA Division II Tiffin.

Zak Wiley (Mooresville, Ind.) Franklin College | Senior – Wiley placed top-six in four different events on Friday night at the RHIT Twilight Meet. Wiley won the hammer throw (49.37m) and took second in the discus (45.07m), fifth in the javelin (38.94m) and sixth in the shot put (12.56m).

Justin Johnson (Camby, Ind.) Hanover College | Senior - Johnson paced the Panthers at the Friday Night Spikes meet as he took second in the 400-meter hurdles crossing the finish line is a time of 58.25 seconds. He also took fourth in the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 16.22 seconds.

Jalen Simons (Indianapolis, Ind.) Hanover College | Senior - Simmons lead the Panthers as part of the Friday Night Spikes meet taking third in the pole vault with a height of 4.35 meters.

Joe Garling (Cedar Lake, Ind.) Manchester University | Senior - Garling placed third in the hammer throw event on Friday night at Ohio Northern. Garling's mark of 49.77m was a new personal record and moved him up to second all-time on the MU Top 10 listings.

Jagger, Brackett, Cox, Hobbs | Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology - The Rose-Hulman 4-x-100 meter relay team of Jacob Jagger, Prescott Brackett, Jack Cox, and Jailen Hobbs won at the Fightin' Engineer Twilight Meet with a time of 42.07 seconds that ranks No. 2 in school history.

Isaiah Lilje (New Concord, Ohio) Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology | Senior – Lilje won the javelin with a career-best throw of 160' 10" at the Rose-Hulman Twilight Meet on Friday. His effort helped the Fightin' Engineers place second as a team at the meet.

Garrett Elrod (Bowling Green, Ky.) Transylvania University | Sophomore - Elrod helped break two school records at the University of Kentucky Invite and finished ahead of Division I competition in every event. He broke the school record in 1500m by over three seconds and helped break the 4x400 relay record that had stood since 2014.

Luke Stegman (Fort Mitchell, Ky.) Transylvania University | First-Year - Stegman set two new school records at the University of Kentucky Invite, going against Division I competition. He broke his own record in discus with a throw that ranked higher than two University of Kentucky DI athletes in the event, and fourth overall. Stegman then set a new school record in shot put as well with a throw of 13.17m

Women’s

Noelle Loller (Lapel, Ind.) Anderson University | Junior - Loller took second in the 1,500 with a time of 4:59.94 during the Mike Becraft Invitational. She currently leads the conference in the 1,500.

Delaney Moore (Indianapolis, Ind.) Anderson University | First-Year - Moore took fourth in the high jump, clearing a height of 1.45 meters during the Mike Becraft Invitational.

Sarah O’Day (Avon, Ind.) Franklin College | Sophomore – O’Day won the 200m dash at the RHIT Twilight Meet, hitting the finish line in 26.31. She added a runner-up finish in the 100m dash with a time of 12.53 seconds.

Taylor Tatlock (Edinburgh, Ind.) Franklin College | Junior – Tatlock claimed first place in the discus with a throw of 37.29m at the RHIT Twilight Meet. She added a runner-up finish in the javelin with a mark of 34.57m.

Brianna Medcalf (Central, Ind.) Hanover College | Senior - Medcalf led the Panthers as part of the Friday Night Spikes meet taking first in the 3,000-meter run, winning the event in a time of 10:29.84.

Nina Jazdewski (Paris, Ky.) Hanover College | First-Year - Jazdewski led the Panthers as part of the Friday Night Spikes meet this past weekend taking third in the pole vault, clearing a height of 3.05 meters.

Brandi Smith (Goshen, Ind.) Manchester University | Junior - Smith broke into the MU Top 10 listings after running a 27.02 in the 200m dash. Smith's time stands as the ninth fastest mark in school history.

Carley Camp (Logansport, Ind.) Manchester University | First-Year - Camp won the shot put on Saturday at Ohio Northern with a leading mark of 12.75m. Camp also added a third-place finish in the hammer throw on Friday night with a mark of 46.42m. Her mark was a new season best and still ranks as the fifth best mark all-time at Manchester.

Hannah Keith (Cincinnati, Ohio) Mount St. Joseph University | First-Year - Keith was one of the top performers at the Mount St. Joseph University Invitational. Keith finished second in the 100 M with a time of 13.5 and finished third in the 200 M with a time of 27.62.

Christina Rogers (Laurel, Md.) Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology | Senior – Rogers placed second in the 400-meter relay (1:01.75) and helped the 4-x-400 meter relay team place second (4:12.72) to help the Fightin' Engineers win the team title at the Rose-Hulman Twilight Meet.

Carson Graves (Frankfort, Ky.) Transylvania University | First-Year - Over the weekend Graves participated in the 400 and 200m dash at the University of Kentucky invite. In a field of multiple Division I athletes, Graves competed hard. She finished with a time of 28.14 in the 200m, besting an athlete from Murray State. In the 400m, Graves finished with a time of 1:03.24, better than athletes from Murray State and Morehead State.

Mary Grace Thompson (Benton, Ky.) Transylvania University | First-Year - Over the weekend Thompson and the Pioneers took part in the University of Kentucky invite, which featured many athletes from Division I schools. Mary Grace finished at seventh place in the Javelin in a field of 11 athletes with a throw of 28.91 meters, which bested athletes from Murray State and Bellarmine.
