HCAC 2022 Women’s Soccer Notebook, Week 1

The Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) women’s soccer teams competed in week one of the 2022 season.

 Athletes of the Week:

Offensive Athlete of the Week:

Beth Cook (Goshen, Ohio) Hanover College | Forward | Sophomore - Cook led the Panthers to a 1-1 week as they defeated Asbury 6-0 but fell to ranked Ohio Northern 3-2. In the season opener, Cook made herself known as she charted a hat trick while firing a game-high 12 shots, 11 of which landed on frame. She also added one goal in the teams contest at ONU.

Defensive Athlete of the Week:

Makayla Hurey (Sidney, Ohio) Earlham College | Goal Keeper | Sophomore - Hurey recorded a clean sheet in two games to begin the 2022 season. She was kept busy in the season opener with nine saves in a 0-0 tie at Adrian, and earned her second shutout of the week at home against Eureka 5-0.

 

Notable Performances:

  • Lauren Brown (Fort Wayne, Ind.) Anderson University | Forward | Sophomore - Brown netted a goal for the Ravens during Anderson's 1-1 tie with St. Mary-of-the-Woods on Thursday.
  • Adrienne Weyers (Granger, Ind.) Anderson University | Goal Keeper | First-Year - Weyers saved three of the four shots she faced during Anderson's 1-1 tie with St. Mary-of-the-Woods.
  • Mallory Smith (Oxford, Ohio) Earlham College | Midfield | First-Year - Smith impressed in her debut performance in Matlack-Messer Stadium on Saturday. The midfielder led the offense with two goals and one assist, including the first goal of the contest.
  • Elaina Page (Cicero, Ind.) Franklin College | Forward | Senior – Page turned in a big second half for the Grizzlies on Sunday afternoon against Berea, scoring two goals and handing out an assist as part of a 4-1 FC win. She assisted on the game-winning goal and score her two goals less than a minute apart to put the game away late.
  • Hailey Stowe (Crestwood, Ky.) Hanover College | Defense | Junior - Stowe helped anchor a backline that surrendered just three goals, all of which came against ranked Ohio Northern. In the teams dominating victory over Asbury 6-0, the defensive unit allowed just one shot that fell unsuccessful.
  • Natalie Dillon (Rochester, N.Y.) Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology | Goalkeeper | Senior – Dillon kept Rose-Hulman in two tight matches with nine saves and a .750 save percentage in a pair of one-goal losses last week. Dillon had seven saves in a 1-0 loss to No. 14 Centre and two saves in a 2-1 loss to Webster.
  • Meron Roach (Lexington, Ky.) Transylvania University | Forward | Senior – Roach returns to the pitch after missing two seasons from an ACL injury. In her first game back, she scored a goal and had an assist to help lead her team to a 2-0 victory over Knox College.
  • Morgan Patton (Lexington, Ky.) Transylvania University | Goal Keeper | Senior – Patton turned in a shutout with two saves in a 2-0 season opener against Knox College.
