Hcac 2022 Football Notebook, Week 11

The Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) football teams competed in week 11 of the 2022 season.

Offensive Athlete of the Week:
Josh Taylor (Mount Orab, Ohio) Mount St. Joseph University | Quarterback | Junior - Taylor was outstanding in the HCAC Championship game, leading the Lions to a 10-0 season with a 40-31 win over Rose-Hulman. Taylor was 17 of 37 passing for 199 yards and two touchdowns and carried the ball 24 times for 157 yards (6.2 per carry) and another three touchdowns.
Defensive Athlete of the Week:
Trey Staley (Fort Wayne, Ind.) Anderson University | Defensive Back | Senior - Staley picked off three passes, including two in the fourth quarter, and also broke up a pass. Staley also blocked Manchester's first-quarter field-goal attempt and also returned three kickoffs for a total of 51 yards to help Anderson seal a 19-12 Bronze Ball victory against Manchester.
Special Teams Athlete of the Week:
Daniel Huery (Katy, Texas) Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology | Wide Receiver | Junior – Huery hauled in five receptions for 122 yards, highlighted by touchdown catches of 34 and 76 yards. He also scored his first career special teams touchdown on a 79-yard kickoff return for a score, to help lead the Rose-Hulman offense in a narrow 40-31 loss to Mount St. Joseph in the HCAC Championship Game. 

Notable Performances:

Gabe Lawler (Greenfield, Ind.) Anderson University | Running Back | Junior - Lawler rushed for 104 yards in Anderson's 19-12 Bronze Ball victory against Manchester.

Maalik Tucker (Fostoria, Ohio) Bluffton University | Running Back | Senior - Tucker tallied 26 runs for 88 yards and he also hauled in three catches for 32 yards.

Brady Welker (Delphos, Ohio) Bluffton University | Defensive End | Senior - Welker finished with six tackles in Bluffton's 17-14 loss to Defiance on Saturday, including 3.5 TFL's for nine yards and a five-yard sack.

CJ Thompson (Indianapolis, Ind.) Bluffton University | Returner | Senior - Thompson returned three kickoffs for 71 yards (23.7 YPR), including a 32-yarder on Saturday.

Rigo Villa (Fort Meyers, Fla.) Defiance College | Defensive Line | Senior - The Defiance defensive front held Bluffton to just 91 rushing yards and lineman Villa was a run-stopping force in the middle of the attack. The Florida product made seven total stops and led Defiance with 2.5 tackles for loss.

Zeke Sanchez (Indianapolis, Ind.) Defiance College | Kicker | Sophomore - In addition to hitting his first two extra-point attempts, Defiance place kicker Zeke Sanchez stepped up and hammered through a 33-yard, game-winning field goal with just 2:42 left in the game to down rival Bluffton by a 17-14 score.

Matthew Weimer (Georgetown, Ind.) Hanover College | Quarterback | Senior - Weimer led the Panthers past Franklin as part of the 92nd Victory Bell game. The senior threw for 299 yards and a touchdown.

Nash Murphy (Columbus, Ind.) Hanover College | Defensive Back | Senior - Murphy led the Panthers past Franklin as part of the 92nd Victory Bell game. The senior picked up 10 total tackles with four solo stops and helped hold Franklin to just 195 yards of total offense.

Austin Price (Batavia, Ohio) Mount St. Joseph University | Safety | Junior - Price was key in the Lions 40-31 win over Rose-Hulman on Saturday. Price led the team with a season-high 10 tackles (six solo) and also picked off a Miguel Robertson pass and returned it 26 yards.

Chaikou Sow (Indianapolis, Ind.) Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology | Defensive Back | Senior – Sow had a career-high 15 tackles, including 8 solo efforts, to lead the Rose-Hulman defense in a narrow 40-31 loss to Mount St. Joseph in the HCAC Championship Game.
