Franklin’s Wojack and Phillips earn 2023 HCAC Athlete of the Year titles
The Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) announced the winners of the Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Athletes of the Year awards on Friday, with Franklin College’s Kosmo Wojack (Mililani, Hawaii) and Caileigh McCafferty (Owensboro, Ky.) earning the awards.
The HCAC male and female swimming and diving athlete of the year honors looks at a swimmer or divers entire body of work over the course of a season, including any post-season appearances.
Wojack, a junior from Franklin College, earned the title of 2023 HCAC Men’s Swimming and Diving Athlete of the year after an outstanding season, culminating in the Grizziles first ever All-American. Wojack qualified for the 2023 NCAA Division III National Championship in the 200 butterfly, where his lifetime best of 1:47.08 placed 10th at the National Championship, earning the title of All-American. The Hawaii native was also a standout at the HCAC Championship, setting new HCAC Championship records in the 400 yard IM (4:03.62) and the 200 yard butterfly (1:48.56) en route to first place in both events. He also teamed up with fellow Grizzlies in the 400 yard medley relay for another gold place performance.
On the women’s side, Phillips earned the title of 2023 HCAC Women’s Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Year after a successful junior season. She was a leader in the league from start to finish, winning all three of her individual events at the HCAC Championship, while adding relay championships as well. Phillips took first and set an HCAC Championship record in the 200 yard butterfly (2:06.99) and also placed first in the 200 yard freestyle (1:53.97) and the 500 yard freestyle (5:03.06). She also teamed up with fellow Grizzlies for first place finishes in three relays, including the 400 medley relay, the 200 medley relay, and the 400 freestyle relay.
